Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art from her grandmother Denise. The aunt worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with an opportunity to study literature or theater. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay learned by example that art can be a vehicle for activism. Her mother was also a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate by means of the medium of art. DuVernay resided in Compton throughout her youth, however she would spend every summer with the extended family of her father living in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was in awe of the idea to film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood CA. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was still at university. DuVernay began her career as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one member of the jury, and then look through their trash. Her tasks to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay was hired right after graduating from college as a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. In 1999, she founded her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency established several lifestyle platforms such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.    Heelan was the daughter of Kimball Heelan, an actress and teacher at Lowell Public Schools, and Kevin Heelan, a playwright. Conor is her older brother. Her father was a dramatic actor and was an active Phillips Andover Academy faculty member since 1983. Heelan was an alumni of the Walnut Hill School for the Arts.
